Innovations in Flexible Packaging – A Q&A with Keith Smith

February 19, 2025

In preparation for a trade article being written about the state of flexible packaging (soon the be released), I jotted down a few questions I expected the journalist to ask. Following the interview, I thought this might be useful content for a blog post.

Whether you’re interested in material innovations, sustainability strategies, or the future of medical device packaging, this insightful article provides a deep dive into the evolving world of flexible packaging.

And if you’re also interested in learning more about Vonco’s leading role as an innovator, I encourage you to keep on reading.

What are the primary materials contract manufacturers use in flexible packaging?

At Vonco, the main material we use is linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), which is known for its recyclability. Other materials like polyester, polypropylene, and nylon are used when additional properties are needed.

How do manufacturers approach sustainability in packaging?

Many companies focus on reducing multi-layer plastics, improving recyclability, and developing biodegradable plastics to lower environmental impact. When determining which materials go into a packaging product, factors include FDA regulations, transportation requirements, durability tests (pressure/drop tests), and user experience. For us, we focus on leak prevention – especially in medical applications, where a leak can create serious hazards like contamination and regulatory violations.

What are the major trends in medical flexible packaging?

Replacing PVC is critical due to regulatory pressures and sustainability concerns. Many companies also focus on eliminating foil from packaging to avoid tariff-related costs or explore alternative sterilization methods to reduce environmental impact.

What trends are emerging in consumer packaging?

One of the greatest opportunities is to Increase demand for spouted and stand-up pouches with single-material designs for recyclability. There are varying definitions of sustainability among brands—some focus on recyclability, while others prioritize reducing material weight. Government regulations, especially in Europe and some U.S. states, are pushing the industry to move away from PVC and non-recyclable materials, accelerating innovation.

Has consumer demand increased for flexible packaging?

Absolutely – yes – but sustainability priorities vary by brand. Some focus on recyclability, while others emphasize material reduction or maintaining specific aesthetics.

What notable consumer or medical projects has Vonco worked on?

We have many projects that feature PVC replacement in medical packaging. Most notably, we recently launched EnteraLoc, a patented tube-feeding solution that improves nutrition delivery for enteral patients. We’re also the pioneer of 95 KPA transport bags. These ultra-durable, leak proof bags provide a flexible alternative to rigid containers for blood sample transport, significantly improving efficiency.

What excites me about the future of flexible packaging?

I believe Vonco is well-positioned to lead the transition away from PVC, which will make a significant impact on sustainability in the medical packaging industry.
